Scientific Notation Converter

Convert any number to scientific notation, or turn scientific notation back into a standard number, with the steps shown.

Works with whole numbers and decimals, positive or negative.

What Is Scientific Notation?

Scientific notation writes very large or very small numbers as a coefficient between 1 and 10, multiplied by a power of 10. Instead of writing 156,000,000, you can write 1.56 x 10^8. Instead of writing 0.000000089, you can write 8.9 x 10^-8. It keeps long strings of zeros from cluttering scientific and engineering work.

How to Convert a Number to Scientific Notation

Move the decimal point until only one non-zero digit remains to its left, then count how many places the decimal point moved. If you moved it to the left, the exponent is positive. If you moved it to the right, the exponent is negative. This tool does that automatically and shows each step alongside the result.

How to Convert Scientific Notation Back to a Decimal

Take the coefficient and move the decimal point by the number of places shown in the exponent, to the right for a positive exponent and to the left for a negative one, filling in zeros as needed. This is exactly what the Scientific to Decimal tab does when you enter a coefficient and exponent.

Good to know

What is scientific notation?+

Scientific notation is a way of writing very large or very small numbers as a number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10, such as 5.6 x 10^8. It makes long numbers shorter and easier to read and compare.

How do I convert a decimal number to scientific notation?+

Move the decimal point so only one non-zero digit remains before it, then count how many places you moved it. That count becomes the exponent of 10, positive if you moved left and negative if you moved right.

How do I convert scientific notation back to a decimal number?+

Move the decimal point the number of places shown by the exponent, to the right for a positive exponent and to the left for a negative exponent, then fill any empty spaces with zeros.

Does Google have a scientific notation converter?+

Google's search calculator can evaluate expressions written in scientific notation, but it does not show a dedicated scientific notation converter widget, so a standalone tool like this one is needed for direct conversions with steps.

What is E notation and how does it relate to scientific notation?+

E notation is a shorthand computers and calculators use for scientific notation, where the letter E replaces "x 10^". For example, 5.6 x 10^8 is written as 5.6E8 or 5.6e8.
